Lake Britvice lies in Croatia. It is a large body of water surrounded by quiet hills and woods. People come by the thousand each year to look at the calm water plus the steep banks. Ice Age glaciers scraped out the basin - meltwater filled it. Pottery and stone tools found nearby show that hunters, farmers but also soldiers lived on the shore long ago. Slavic tribes, Italian merchants besides Ottoman raiders all used the lake as a landmark and a source of fresh water.
The water is clear as well as reflects the sky. Beeches and low shrubs cover the slopes. Valleys cut into the hills or small waterfalls drop over limestone ledges. Paths climb from the shore to the ridge tops - each turn opens a view of the blue lake and the distant peaks.
