Seven negative points that will surprise you if you are very smart

You might assume that having a very, very high IQ would have a lot of perks.

Show key points

  • Highly intelligent individuals often struggle with expressing emotions, choosing analysis over emotional release.
  • Because things come easily, some smart people may not develop a strong work ethic or understand the value of perseverance.
  • Being regarded as highly capable can lead to unrealistic expectations and an intense fear of failure.

  • Constantly correcting inaccuracies in conversations may alienate friends or make others uncomfortable.
  • Overthinking and obsessive analysis can hinder decision-making and amplify existential anxiety.
  • Others may misinterpret a desire to share knowledge as arrogance or bragging.
  • Exceptionally intelligent people often become more aware of their knowledge gaps, leading to a sense of intellectual insufficiency.

For example, you won't have to study hard for tests, and when you read complex concepts you'll understand them right away, or you'll be able to take on difficult but exciting jobs like rocket science.

All of this may be true, but there are also important downsides when you're too smart.

Read on and find out what really bothers super-smart people.

1. You often think instead of feeling.

Marcus Giddold, a user of Quora, says he generally understands his feelings well and can tell others about them, but he never feels comfortable expressing them.

"This is a common problem in smart people, especially those who talk a lot. They use words with many meanings, and it becomes more effective when their words are correct. Less eloquent people tend to vent through the body. They scream, punche, kick, run, scream, cry, dance, and jump with joy. When I finish explaining, everything I've explained is still stuck inside me, but it's already known.

2. You may not learn the value of hard work

A number of Quora users have reported that smart people feel able to get by with less effort than other people. But a high IQ doesn't always lead to success directly, and highly intelligent people may not be able to develop the perseverance required to succeed.

According to Kent Fong, "intelligence becomes a problem when those who possess it discover early in life that they don't need to work hard to keep up, and therefore never develop a strong and good work ethic."

When you're very smart, people assume you'll excel in tests, job interviews, and even solving human relationship problems.

3. People often expect you to be the best performer.

Roshna Nazir wrote: "You're automatically expected to be the best, no matter what." "You have no one to talk to about your weaknesses and your sense of insecurity"

What is the other unfortunate consequence of these unrealistic expectations? That you will panic about what can happen if you do not perform to a very high level.

Saurabh Mehta wrote: "This makes you so cautious about your failure that sometimes you can't afford to take risks just for fear of what might happen if you lose.

4. People may be upset that you continue to correct their words in a normal conversation

When you know that someone said something that is completely inaccurate, it's hard to suppress the urge to explain.

But you need to be very sensitive to the fact that others may feel embarrassed and offended by your actions – or risk losing some friends.

Raxit Karamaridi says that being smart is unfortunate, "when you correct people every time to the point that they stop hanging around with you or talking to you.

5. You tend to overthink things

A common theme in this Quora theme was the risk of spending too much time thinking and analyzing.

For one thing, you may get angry when you try to find the existential significance of each concept and experience. Akash Lada writes: "You realize how dying everything is, and that nothing really means anything. You're looking for answers and it drives you crazy."

From a more practical point of view, you may find it impossible to make a decision.

"Understanding the potential consequences of your decisions, especially the tendency to over-analyze those consequences," writes Tirthankar Chakraburti.

6. People often think that you are bragging.

Sometimes people assume that when you're really excited to share something you've learned, you actually just mean to brag about your knowledge.

"It's frustrating when people say things like, 'He thinks he's very smart,' or 'He thinks he knows everything,' and that's when you're just trying to be useful, and you're never 'showing off'," says Bill Vanneau.

7. You understand how much you do not know.

Being super-intelligent often means appreciating the limits of your knowledge. Try your best, but you'll never be able to learn or understand everything.

Mike Farkas wrote: "Intelligence is a curse when... The more you know, the less you feel like you know.
